CBW provides a range of services to child victims of natural and man-made disasters through several programs. Services meet the educational, recreational, and sanitation and housing needs of refugee children and youth.

Water and Sanitation (WATSAN)
Project overview
The water and sanitation programme aims to improve sanitation on camp and spread awareness of issues relating to health and hygiene, in order to reduce disease. It was the first CBW project to be set up on camp.

Activities of project
The watsan team conduct five main activities on camp:
  • 1. Clearing drains - twice weekly, the team unclogs the main drains on camp by removing rubbish.
  • 2. Maintaining drains - the team maintains the condition of drains, by rebuilding where necessary to ensure that they do not fill with sediment.
  • 3. Spraying - twice weekly, the team sprays dump sites and homes (for a small fee) with insecticide and germicide to prevent the spread of disease.
  • 4. Emptying community garbage bins donated by CBW.
  • 5. Community outreach - informal discussion groups with community members, which aim to promote knowledge of issues relating to health and sanitation, so that communities are able to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment and preventing the spread of disease.

Long term aims of watsan programme
The watsan programme aims to maintain a hygienic environment on camp, ultimately with the intention of community members taking responsibility for this.

International volunteers in watsan programme
International volunteers assist the watsan team with all of their activities. Specifically, there is scope for them to:
  • 1. Assist with clearing and maintenance of drains.
  • 2. Assist with spraying of homes.
  • 3. Join community outreach visits and help to create resources for these.
  • 4. Empty bins on camp.
There are no specific qualifications required to work with the watsan programme but volunteers joining this project should be prepared for physical exertion!

If international volunteers want to bring materials for the watsan programme, gardening gloves are most welcome.

It is important to read the handover notes of previous volunteers on the watsan programme to ensure continuity between volunteers.
