CBW provides a range of services to child victims of natural and man-made disasters through several programs. Services meet the educational, recreational, and sanitation and housing needs of refugee children and youth.

Recreation
Project overview
The recreation team aims to promote sporting activities on camp as a means of building community relations, both within camp, and with other Liberian and Ghanaian groups.

Activities of project
The activities of the recreation team include:
  • 1. Facilitating training and support (not funding) for 3 CBW football teams (the highest of which has a place in the Ghanaian 2nd division).
  • 2. Run Physical Education lessons in CBW schools.
  • 3. Running training sessions open to the community.
  • 4. Organise sporting tournaments.
  • 5. Organise recreational activities for CBW staff and volunteers (e.g. monthly bike rides).
  • 6. Hire out the CBW football field (the only full-sized one on camp) to generate income for CBW, as well as for the Welfare Council, the players and others in the community.
  • 7. Promote talented sporting individuals from the camp to West African teams by organising tours.
Local volunteers involved in programme
Supervisor: Rufus
Football coach: Bokolo

Programme timetable
Daily training for football team and community from 6.00 - 9.00.

Future aims
The recreation programme aims to promote sporting activities amongst children and women in the future, for example by organising a children's football team and a women's kick-ball team.

International volunteers in recreation programme
International volunteers assist local volunteers in all activities. Specifically, there is scope for them to:
  • 1. Attend training sessions.
  • 2. Teach P.E. lessons in CBW schools.
  • 3. Help to organise sporting tournaments.
  • 4. Help to organize recreational activities for CBW staff and volunteers.
There are no specific qualifications required to work with the recreation programme, but an aptitude for sport is desirable.

It is important to read the handover notes of previous volunteers on the recreation programme to ensure continuity between volunteers.
