CBW provides a range of services to child victims of natural and man-made disasters through several programs. Services meet the educational, recreational, and sanitation and housing needs of refugee children and youth.

Community Library
Project overview
There is a well stocked CBW community library on camp, which is accessible during the day. In addition to this, the library is used for storytime and craft day, each of which is run by international volunteers twice a week.

Local volunteers involved in programme
Librarian: Evelyn

Programme timetable Craft Day: Tuesday and Thursday 9.00 - 12.00
Storytime: Monday and Wednesday 14.00 - 15.00

International volunteers in community library programme
International volunteers work with Evelyn to run craft day and storytime.
  • 1. Craft Day: This attracts children between the ages of 2 to 15 and so a variety of activities are required. International volunteers need to plan the sessions carefully to ensure activities can be completed within the allocated time. Examples of activities include making masks, lanterns and flags. The CBW storeroom contains craft materials but any materials that international volunteers are able to bring out are much appreciated. The number of children attending varies but can exceed 100!
  • 2. Storytime: This attracts both children from school, who are able to read, and children who do not attend school. International volunteers are therefore needed to read aloud to those children who cannot read and to read individually with those who can. Children are also taught to look after books and keep the library tidy. The number of children attending storytime is approximately 15 at each session.
There are no specific qualifications required to work with the community library programme; volunteers will require enthusiasm and patience!

If international volunteers want to bring materials for the community library programme, craft materials and story books are very welcome.

It is important to read the handover notes of previous volunteers on the community library programme to ensure continuity between volunteers.
