CBW provides a range of services to child victims of natural and man-made disasters through several programs. Services meet the educational, recreational, and sanitation and housing needs of refugee children and youth.

HIV/AIDS
Project Overview
The HIV/ AIDS programme works to educate the population of Buduburam camp about HIV/ AIDS, STDs and teenage pregnancy and offers care and support to those living with HIV/ AIDS. The programme has been in operation for nearly 4 years.

Activities of project
The HIV/ AIDS team conduct five main activities in camp:
  • 1. School visits - taking weekly classes in local schools to educate teenagers on HIV/ AIDS, STDs and teenage pregnancy.
  • 2. Community outreach - holding small discussion groups with community members (5-10 people) twice a week in order to spread knowledge about HIV / AIDS throughout the camp.
  • 3. Care and support visits - visiting those living with HIV/ AIDS, providing counselling and helping them with daily chores. This is essential as sufferers are usually abandoned by family and friends and there is still great stigma attached to the disease.
  • 4. Drama club - a group of students from the CBW school meets twice weekly to rehearse an HIV drama which it is hoped will be performed as part of an evening outreach scheme.
  • 5. Workshops - 3 annual workshops providing HIV/ AIDS education and targetting churches, schools and local businesses.

Long term aims of HIV/ AIDS programme
The HIV/ AIDS programme aims to reach as many people as possible within the camp with the highest possible quality of HIV/ AIDS education, and to support those affected by the disease.

International volunteers in HIV/ AIDS programme
International volunteers assist local volunteers with all of their activities. Specifically, there is scope for them to:
  • 1. Teach HIV/ AIDS education in schools.
  • 2. Assist with small discussion groups on HIV / AIDS with community members and answering their questions.
  • 3. Visit HIV/ AIDS sufferers and offer counselling and care.
  • 4. Help run the drama club and develop this into an evening outreach programme.
  • 5. Help organise and run HIV/ AIDS awareness workshops.
  • 6. Create resources to support the work of the HIV/ AIDS programme.
  • 7. Developing and implementing new methods to tackle the problem of the stigma attached to HIV in the community.
  • 8. Help to devise new fundraising methods to support the care and support activities of the programme.

There are no specific qualifications required to work with the HIV/ AIDS programme: international volunteers will be dealing with sensitive issues and therefore the most important qualities that they can bring are compassion and commitment. Experience in the fields of HIV/ AIDS or a background in counselling or teaching are beneficial but not required.

It is important to read the handover notes of previous volunteers on the HIV/ AIDS programme to ensure continuity between volunteers.
